Professor of Outcomes Methodology, Institute of Applied Health Research, University of Birmingham
How do the goals of the PROTEUS Consortium align with your professional interests?
At the Centre for Patient Reported Outcomes Research, University of Birmingham, UK we aim to optimize the use of PROs in clinical trials and routine care, improve service delivery, enhance patient care/outcomes, and ensure the patient perspective is central to healthcare research and clinical decision-making.
PROTEUS directly aligns with this aim by promoting better and more patient-centered care by supporting the best possible use of PROs in clinical trials (PROTEUS-Trials) and in clinical practice (PROTEUS-Practice).
How has being a part of the PROTEUS Consortium benefited your work or research?
Over the last decade I have been privileged to work with international collaborators leading development of SPIRIT-PRO and CONSORT-PRO guidance and contributing to the SISAQOL-IMI consortium. (Editor’s note: see two of the PROTEUS Consortium’s latest tools to support use of SPIRIT-PRO and CONSORT-PRO below in this newsletter). More recently my team has led work on PRO ethics guidance and inclusive equitable PRO data collection. PROTEUS has curated tools and resources to support wider and more effective uptake of PROs in trials and practice.
PROTEUS includes representatives from patient, clinician, research, health system, industry, policy, government, and regulatory groups from the U.S. and internationally. I value being part of such a vibrant community driving best practice and providing thought-leadership in the use of PROs around the world.
Can you share any specific examples of how you have utilized the resources provided by the PROTEUS Consortium?
I regularly provide training on the use of PROs in trials and routine care and signpost to the PROTEUS resources. If you have not taken a look at the website training videos and resources I encourage you to do so.
