How do the goals of the PROTEUS Consortium align with your professional interests?
I am a medical oncologist and a clinical researcher with long standing interest in the application of PROs (including symptom reporting and HRQOL measures) in clinical practice to support individual patient care. I led one of the first randomized trials showing patient benefits from HRQOL measurement in cancer clinics.
It is now great to see the mounting evidence for patient benefit. The PROTEUS Consortium brings together the existing evidence in an accessible format and is a valuable resource supporting the implementation of PROs in oncology. The PROTEUS Consortium also brings together an impressive network of health professionals and researchers with diverse knowledge and experience in the field.
How has being a part of the PROTEUS Consortium benefited your work or research?
Having the opportunity to meet many professionals from the U.S. and see different approaches to PRO implementation is the most valuable for me. This became available via the Learning Health Network which brought together a diverse group of enthusiastic health professionals and researchers, all of whom had worked hard to adapt ePROs to their specific clinical workflows and patient groups. It has been particularly interesting to compare the different healthcare systems, the common issues, and how the solutions may be adapted.
Can you share any specific examples of how you have utilized the resources provided by the PROTEUS Consortium?
I have referred to the online resources for practical ideas for implementation and especially for evaluation of benefits, such as which framework to use and what outcomes to collect. I have also given many presentations to clinical and research meetings that included references to PROTEUS, directing clinicians and researchers to this rich resource. Specifically, I extensively used the structure of PROTEUS Practice when I was asked to write a UK and NHS specific guide on the Integration of Electronic Patient‐Reported Outcome Measures (ePROMs) in NHS Oncology Services.
